Archeology of Caranqui
The
Caranquis the stone, they used the tuff and adobes, although they created great
monuments. They buried their dead in artificial mounds of earth called
"Tolas". They are also characterized by the construction of truncated
and stepped pyramids. These pyramids were made of blocks of cangagua or
volcanic tuff.
Caranqui
hidden place of the province of Imbabura, has an ancestral history on the lost
Tolas, which in their times were the places destined for homes of their leaders
and also for rites, ceremonies and funeral spaces.
They
are a living reflection of the history of this region that was a refuge from
the volcanic activity, a ceremonial place for the Caranqui caciques and a
privileged agricultural site for the Incas and Spaniards
These
pyramids are the second best conserved of the equator, were occupied by the
Incas and colonized by the Spaniards.
At
present both chronicles and archaeological sites demonstrate the existence of a
highly developed culture. This has led certain professionals to ensure that the
Caranquis formed an old State or that at least they were about to confer one.
